CBD oil has become a real sensation in the health market. It’s because of its numerous health benefits. That’s why a lot of people started using it as an alternative medication and a lot of holistic doctors support it and even use it in their treatments.
But, the most interesting thing is that a lot of dog owners started giving CBD oil to their dogs. Some give CBD for anxiety, some for pain relief, and some give it to improve the health condition of their senior dogs. The reason why they took this step is that CBD affects the dog’s body the same or very similar way it affects our body. This is because we, humans, and all mammals (including dogs) have an endocannabinoid system. And, according to what has been found, CBD works through this system, thus affecting our entire organism.
However, since there have been only a small number of studies on CBD’s effect on dogs, you should be careful when giving it to your dog. In fact, you have to be very careful when you choose a CBD oil for your pet. In order to choose the best product, there is, here are some things you need to consider before making a decision.
1. Choose Hemp-derived Instead of Cannabis-derived CBD Oil
CBD oil is usually made by extracting the oil from cannabis. However, it can also be made by extracting the oil from the hemp plant. Although both sources are beneficial, there are some differences.
Namely, cannabis contains a big amount of THC, whereas hemp contains a small amount. In order to be legal, the CBD oil has to contain less than 0.3% THC. That means your dog will experience the benefits of the product without getting high.
2. Choose Full-spectrum Instead of CBD Isolate
Full-spectrum CBD oil contains all cannabinoids from the hemp plant. This includes CBC, CBG, terpenes, and THC (but only in the amount it’s legal). Containing all natural-occurring cannabinoids is very important because some of them have the ability to block pain and inflammation and support the brain cells’ function (CBC) and others (CBG) protect nerve cells, the eyes, reduce inflammation in the digestive tract, fight cancer cells, and support bladder’s function. Having all of these substances together creates a so-called “entourage effect” which means they all work together to boost the benefits of the hemp oil.
3. Choose a Hemp Oil That is Extracted Using the CO2 Extraction Method
There are four main extraction methods, including CO2, olive oil, dry ice, and solvent extraction. The difference between them is in the amount and quality of extracted oil. And while the first three methods are considered healthy, the last one (solvent) is definitely harmful because it uses chemicals such as propane, butane, and ethanol, to extract the oil.
Therefore, when choosing a product make sure it’s not produced using the solvent extraction method. And, choose a product that has used CO2 extraction method whenever possible because it’s of the highest quality. In that way, you will ensure your dog consumes a safe product.

4. Choose a Product That Comes with a Certificate of Analysis Provided
Certificate of Analysis is a report from a third-party lab that shows the type and amount of cannabinoids found in the CBD oil. In that way, it shows you whether or not the things listed on the label are correct. And, it ensures you buy a quality product for your dog. However, when looking at the report, make sure the amount of CBD shown in it matches the amount shown on the label.
5. Choose an Organic Product
In order to ensure your dog’s safety, you should buy CBD oil that is derived from an organically grown hemp plant. This means that the plant hasn’t been treated with any pesticides or other harmful chemicals. It also means that the soil and water where it was grown were clean.
6. Choose a Product with Nano-sized Emulsion
The method of CBD emulsion plays an important role in its quality and power. That’s why you need to know the 3 types of emulsions. Those are:
- Standard – provides large particles and poor absorption.
- Liposomal – smaller particles and good absorption.
- Nano-sized – smallest particles and great absorption.
As you can see they differ in the size of the particles produced and the absorption power. That’s why you should always choose the product with Nano-sized emulsion. Or, if you can’t find one like that, choose one with liposomal emulsion.
Apart from these things, you should also be very careful with the additives. The CBD oil mustn’t contain any added chemicals and preservatives. Also, it shouldn’t contain essential oils, unless the vet recommends that. And, of course, don’t look at the price because a higher price usually means a quality product.
