You know how they say the shortest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach? Courtesy of a stray kitty, I now know the even shorter way to a mother’s heart; her kids. This stray kitty that landed on our doorstep one rainy morning must have known the easiest way to warm her way into my heart.
My son was a little under two at the time. I’ll have you know I didn’t hate cats, I was just indifferent. I’d just never thought about having a cat in the house and always preferred to have dogs instead. But the moment Justin saw the cat, he fell in love.
She was a black and brown cat and no, not with stripes. I had never seen such a color before or since so I thought she looked so different. She seemed to have brown and black hairs intermingling to create a very dark brown color.
I had to let her in because Justin wanted her so bad, and we made her a warm bed in a corner in our kitchen. We also bought her some cat food and took her to the vet for shots and to make sure everything was okay with her.
Since then, kitty and my boy were inseparable. They would go everywhere and play together all day. It was all I could do to convince Justin not to take the kitty to bed with him, but it happened anyway because the cat would wait until I had gone to bed and sneak to my son’s bed. I had lost that battle as well.
Soon, the cat found a way to become best friends with me. I remember one cold morning in my home office. She came and sat on my windowsill and looked out the window, keeping me company and looking like she was protecting me from intruders. I was so engrossed in my work I didn’t notice she had crept under my desk and slept on my feet. It was only when I moved my feet and lost her body warmth that I realized she had been keeping me warm all along.
Sushi is now a fattened cat that looks nothing like the cold kitty that landed on our doorstep a rainy morning so long ago. She is part of the family and the house is not the same when she is not around. She loves all of us and we love her back, but Justin has and always will have her allegiance first. I guess she knows exactly who she owes a loving family and warm bed too.
Did I mention she converted me from a dog person to a dog and cat person?
