5 Emergency Health Condition of Dogs that can’t be Delayed

Dealing with dog health problems is never a pleasant experience and when you notice that your dog seems to be a bit under the weather, you should always consult the vet. However, there are some conditions that must be treated as an emergency and you should rush your dog to your vet’s clinic immediately.

1. Poisoning

Many different food substances can be toxic for your dog. This becomes increasingly common during holidays where dog consume human food which is easily accessible and is usually poisonous for them. Apart from this, poisonous substances including cleaning items, pesticides, grooming products and human medication can also turn out to be harmful for your dog.
Different toxic substances cause various signs and symptoms. Most common among these include diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite and excessive drooling. If you notice any of these signs, you must rush to the vet immediately for evaluation.

2. Trauma

Trauma classifies one of the most serious forms of injury and is commonly encountered by the vets. Mostly, dogs get into a fight with another dog and injuries caused in the process are quite fatal at times. Many times, dogs tend to get hit by a car or injuries occur as a result of falling from somewhere high up.
It is important for you to consult a vet immediately after your dog has gotten injured to evaluate the extent of injuries and severity of trauma. Severe cases can lead to shock, heavy bleeding, fractured bones, internal injuries that cause internal bleeding and death.

3. Insect stings

Generally insect bites don’t cause serious ailment but at times, your dog might develop a hypersensitive reaction to insect stings which may require immediate veterinary care. Your dog maybe extra sensitive or insect bites from venomous species such as snakes, scorpions and spiders can cause serious harm to your dog.
Your dog may suddenly start to yelp or whine with excruciating pain. They may experience muscle spasms which also includes paralysis of respiratory muscles.

4. Respiratory distress

Your dog may experience respiratory distress for many different reasons. One of the most common reason is due to choking. Your dog might swallow a toy unintentionally, causing their airway to get blocked and causing them to stop breathing. Respiratory distress is always an emergency and you should rush to your vet.
Your dog may present with gagging and may develop blue, grey or purple gums. They might often start gasping for air, in which case you should rush to the clinic to get them help.

5. Heat stroke

If your dog likes to play outside, they are more prone to develop a heat stroke in the summers. If you noticed your dog panting or if they show signs of discomfort, check your dog’s temperature. A temperature above 106 F confirms that your dog is going through a heat stroke. It may also present as loss of consciousness, diarrhea, vomiting and excessive drooling. Make sure you consult your vet immediately if such signs are present.
